How to Display Retail Hats, Gloves & Scarves

By Blair Foy, eHow Contributor

Creating an eye-catching retail display of hats, gloves and scarves can attract potential customers who are seeking outdoor apparel for cold weather. Whether your display is in a window front or resides in the store itself, a successful display of winter wear will promote your merchandise as well as bring excitement and curiosity to your business. With a moderate amount of preparation and planning, you can design and create your own retail display to showcase your inventory of hats, gloves and scarves.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

  1. Planning Your Display
  • 1

Identify the purpose of your display. Ask yourself what will be most effective for your business. Do you want to create a window display or design a retail display inside your business? While both types of displays are used in an effort to attract customers, window displays offer more opportunities for creativity. In-store displays, such as endcaps, are more straightforward for the purpose of selling winter outerwear. For a women’s expo or craft fair, displays can include tables and canvas walls for a booth.

  • 2

Choose what merchandise you want to highlight for your display. Generally, it is more effective to pick bright and bold pieces to feature in a retail display. It can be more difficult to attract the attention of potential customers when the highlighted merchandise is bland or plain.

  • 3

Determine what the focal point of the retail display will be. For example, to highlight the scarves in a retail window front display, hang a large wreath in the middle of the window. Wrap the wreath with the brightest scarves in your merchandise. Tie hats onto the wreath as well. Use clear fishing line to hang brightly-hued mittens and gloves at varying lengths around the scarf wreath. Supplement the hanging mittens with snowflakes that are also hanging at different lengths. While the mittens and snowflakes add design elements to the window front, their intended purpose is to support the key design item of the scarves. For an endcap display, place each item together such as hanging all of the scarves, creating a hat shelf and glove shelf. Hang a small mirror so customers can see how they will look in the merchandise.

Check for balance. While you are creating your retail display, monitor the placement of items to ensure a sense of balance is maintained throughout the design. Key elements of balance include placing the largest, darkest items near the floor as they create a sense of heaviness for a potential customer. When grouping merchandise items for the display, ensure the groups are balanced upon placement in the design. For instances such as a women’s expo or craft fair, keep balance by hanging the scarves and placing hats and gloves on a table.
